Good afternoon, Fruit of the spirit is an important topic. This is because as Christ children, we should be fruit bearers. If we're not showing fruit, then we're not reflecting Christ. It's necessary as we grow to show the fruits of Christ. Some fruits are easier to have than others.
Galatians 5:22-23
[22]But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
[23]Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Love is the first fruit mentioned. This is mentioned several times in God's word. One of which is:
John 13:34-35
[34]A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
[35]By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
When I teach this to children, I always ask them how they can show Christ's love to others. I'm going to bring this question to you as well. How do you show Christ's love to others?
The next is joy. This doesn't mean we have to be chipper all the time. However, we are to reflect joy even in the toughest of times. Think about it. If you're going through some stuff and you show anger and ugliness... Do you think someone witnessing this will say " Gee I want what he/she has" ? Not likely. If we in turn show joy during this time, others will see what we have in Christ. Then they might say " I want that kind of joy".
The next is peace. This is a hard one for a lot of people and use to be for me. There are a lot of peace robbers out there. Real true peace can only come from giving everything to God. When I notice my peace being thieved, I stop and pray. Communication with Jesus is the only way to restore it.
Now long-suffering, this can be difficult as well. It requires patience. When life hits you hard, do those around you see a person that can withstand the fire? I'm not just asking about endurance, I'm questioning if you maintain a Christ like attitude while in the fire.
Then we have gentleness. This isn't a difficult one for me. I'm typically a gentle person. However, there are those that are very matter of fact and come across as not being gentle. We can be straight to the point and still deliver it with gentleness.
Goodness, this requires us to be good to all. Yes even those we don't like or tolerate well. Being Christ like means being good to others. Think of some ways you can be good to someone this week.
Faith, faith is something we must have if we believe in Jesus as our Savior. Faith is also brought about in being faithful. Are you faithful in your commitments? Are you faithful in trusting and serving God?
As for meekness, there are several definitions in the Bible for meekness. Here we're talking about not having a need to be first. Putting others before your self. Christ put us first when He died for our sins. We can be meek in not having to be the center of everything, not having to be first, allowing others to receive blessings, letting someone else have a chance to serve Christ and serving others instead of being served.
Temperance is the last fruit mentioned and still very important. It's about self-control. Temperance comes from the Greek word egkrateia, meaning strength, not physical strength, but inward strength that helps us to make the best choices. This is also referring to being slow to anger, not easily riled up.
I know this is a lot to take in, but as His children it's so important to understand and strive to bare fruit. A dead fruit tree is of no good. Neither is a stale Christian.
